A recent addition to the West Coast music scene, Andrew Wright is a talented, young singer/songwriter known for his deep bass-baritone voice and catchy tunes about everything to do with love. Hailing all the way from “the Chicago of the North” (Winnipeg), Andrew made his bold leap out to the coast with the intention of ruffling some feathers in Victoria’s folk-dominated music scene with his all-too-rare blend of country, pop and rock ‘n’ roll pitted tunes.
“I sold my house, quit my job, traded vehicles with my parents, and drove over the mountains on probably the worst day that I possibly could… I didn’t care. I just decided that I didn’t want to wake up in thirty years with 100 songs that no one has ever heard.”
Born into a very musical family, many of Andrew’s first memories include singing songs with his mom while his father strummed alongside on the guitar. Remaining true to his family’s musical roots, Andrew began his foray into songwriting at the tender age of 14. Citing them as his primary support group and major music influencers, Andrew reserves all accolades he has received for his parents.
"My Mom was the school music teacher, and my Dad is a classically trained guitarist. I was hesitant to learn guitar at first, but I quickly realized that if you play guitar, the girls will listen."
While holding down a residency as the Sunday night ‘entertainer’ at local Winnipeg joint, Dylan O’Connors, Andrew passionately sharpened his gift of writing songs and drawing in crowds with his soulful country voice. Between pub gigs and campfire jams with friends, Andrew also spent three years as lead singer and rhythm guitar player for Wallace Avenue, a rock/blues/indie band also based out of Winnipeg. Since moving to the Garden City, Andrew has played over 50 shows both up and down Vancouver Island in Parksville, Nanaimo, Lantzville and the Comox Valley as well as in Victoria and Vancouver. Andrew hit a high in 2013 when his current project, The Andrew Wright Band, opened for Daniel Wesley at the University of Victoria Grad party held at the Strathcona hotel in Victoria. In October of 2013, The Andrew Wright Band independently released their debut album, “Island Time”.
Currently, the Andrew Wright Band can be found playing shows in and around Vancouver Island, which includes a weekly gig at The Bard and Banker Pub. The Andrew Wright Band performs as a 2-piece, playing alongside his manager and “Island Time” co-producer Justin LaPointe, or as a full 5-piece band, which includes the addition of classically-trained violinist Noah Matsell. Watch out for The Andrew Wright Band’s next album out in summer 2017!
